Sour cream dip is delicious, easy to make and always a crowd pleaser. It’s the ultimate dip recipe for game day, summer get togethers and beyond! This sour cream dip makes a great vegetable dip, and it’s perfect for chips and crackers too. Skip the mix and make this easy homemade version that requires just 3 simple ingredients!
With just one bite you’ll ditch store bought dips forever. It requires very minimal effort and is so much better fresh! This sour cream dip features flavorful, fragrant sautéed onions, blended into creamy sour cream with a hint of salt. This onion dip is smooth and mellow in comparison to the rich flavor of my Pan Fried Onion Dip, which makes it a popular party dip.
Sour cream makes a great base for dips because it’s smooth and creamy with a slight tangy flavor that everyone craves. This dip lends itself to every occasion. Baby showers, Memorial Day, Labor Day, 4th of July, game day and everything in between!
The flavor profile plays well with almost everything. Because you can make it in advance and it’s easy to transport, it’s a great recipe to make and take to potlucks, too!
Ingredients
- Sour Cream – Sour cream creates the ultimate base for this dip. To lighten it up, substitute sour cream with low fat sour cream or Greek yogurt.
- Oil – A neutral oil like canola or grape seed is preferred, but you can also use olive oil or vegetable oil.
- Onion – White onion is preferred, but yellow onion also works well. Learn how to cut an onion here!
- Salt – A hint of salt brings out the flavors in this sour cream dip.
- Chives – Optional garnish that adds a hint of flavor and beautiful color.
Variations
- Garnish with green onions or any fresh herbs for a pop of vibrant color.
- Season – Add a teaspoon of your favorite seasoning for even more flavor – try it with Fiesta Ranch Seasoning, for example.
- You can spice it up by adding pepper or red pepper.
Tips from my Test Kitchen
- Allow it to marinate for up to 24 hours for the best flavor, but it can be served immediately.
- If you want to really take it up a notch, you can display it in a hollowed out bread bowl, hollowed cabbage, pepper or squash. The options are endless!

Sounds really good. I am wondering if you have you ever added softened cream cheese to the sour cream? Just wondering because it sounds good in my head, but I don’t want to waste the ingredients if it doesn’t taste good. hahaha.
It’s so good, but you’re welcome to blend cream cheese in as well. Enjoy!
