Burger Seasoning Ingredients and Substitutions

Paprika – Adds its characteristic mild, sweet flavor.

Cayenne pepper – Just a little to turn up the heat.

Garlic powder – The powder works best, but you can substitute with 2 tsp dried garlic flakes or 1 tsp garlic salt. If you use garlic salt, omit any extra salt from the recipe.

Onion powder – You can substitute with dried onion flakes, and even use a blender, mortar and pestle, or rolling pin to recreate the texture of the powder.

Salt – Use thick flakes of fresh ground sea salt preferred for the best flavor.

Black pepper – Thick flakes of fresh ground black pepper preferred.

Brown sugar (packed) – Adds the right amount of sweetness.

Variations

  • Use smoked paprika for a mild, smoky flavor.
  • Add up to 1 tsp mustard powder.
  • If you’d like, eliminate the salt. There is some evidence (and disagreements among chefs) about the concept of salt drying burgers as they cook. That’s for you to decide!
