Ingredients and Substitutions
- Heavy Cream – This is often labeled as Heavy Whipping Cream in the dairy section at your grocery store. For best results, keep chilled until you are ready to use. (Two cups of heavy cream are pictured in separate measuring cups, above.)
- Sweetened Condensed Milk – Not to be confused with Evaporated Milk. These are not the same things! Sweet Condensed Milk helps makes the consistency of this homemade ice cream so perfect!
- Mascarpone – A rich Italian cheese with a higher percentage of butterfat, making it extra smooth and creamy!
- Vanilla – Try my homemade vanilla extract for an extra special touch, or just use your favorite vanilla you have on hand! Authentic vanilla extract is a much more desirable flavor profile (over imitation vanilla).
Variations
- Swirl in Fruit – Blueberries, strawberries, peaches, lemon juice and zest…the options are endless!
- Add Cookies – Homemade Oreos, speculoos, or your favorite cookie!
- Swirl in Sauces – Fleur De Sel Caramel Sauce, Strawberry Syrup, Raspberry Sauce…any of your favorites!

Tips
- Place your mixing bowl in the freezer for a few hours before whipping the cream. If the bowl isn’t cold enough, it can take longer for the ice cream to set.
- Your freezer’s coldest area is probably in the back. Store your ice cream there for a quicker freeze and to store.
- Pull your cream out of the fridge right before you use it. It won’t whip up quickly if it is warm.
