Ingredients and Substitutions
- Butter – Unsalted butter (not margarine) at room temperature. Learn how to soften butter quickly.
- Sugar – White granulated sugar.
- Brown Sugar – Dark or light, firmly packed into the measuring cup.
- Applesauce – You read that right! Trust me, you’ll love it! If you prefer, you can substitute oil, but this offers the best, most traditional cookie dough flavor and consistency.
- Vanilla – I use Homemade Vanilla Extract but store bought works as well!
- Flour – All purpose flour, heat treated flour if you prefer – read more below in the tips section or simply go to How to Heat Treat Flour.
- Salt – A hint of salt brings out all the other flavors. If you’re using salted butter, simply eliminate the salt.
- White Chocolate + Red Food Coloring or Red Chocolate Melts – Don’t want to make them Christmas themed? You can use milk or dark chocolate if you prefer.
- Miniature Chocolate Chips – I use semi-sweet, but you can use milk or dark chocolate if you prefer or eliminate them altogether.

- Use store bought edible cookie dough.
- Change the colors of the exterior shell for a festive display in any shade!

Frequently Asked Questions

Do your own research and make the best decision for your family!
The main difference is that there is no egg in edible cookie dough. Raw cookie dough will have egg and baking powder or soda. Furthermore, most edible cookie dough recipes request that you heat treat the flour for safe consumption.
